Ernesto Alfaro-Moreno, the LEARN project’s coordinator from the International Iberian Nanotechnology Laboratory (INL), and Nina Hobi, scientific director and CEO of the LEARN partner AlveoliX, were present at EUROTOX 2024, the 58th Congress of the European Societies of Toxicology.
Held from September 8th to 11th in Copenhagen, Denmark, the congress was organised with the support of the Danish Society of Toxicology and Pharmacology under the theme ‘Toxicology, a quest for safer chemicals and medicines‘. Its programme included a variety of topics dealing with the safety of drugs and environmental chemicals, new and emerging technologies, personalised medicine, human health effects caused by exposure to chemicals, and safety issues arising from climate change.
During the event, INL presented the following three posters with results related to the LEARN project:
- ‘Co-cultures of type I and type II pneumocytes with endothelial cells to study the impact of nanoparticles on lung barrier function‘
- ‘Behavioral alterations by micro(nano) plastics: Insights from Zebrafish and Caenorhabditis elegans‘
- ‘A newly developed microfluidic system designed for the cultivation of 3D epidermis and full-thickness skin, tailored for nanoparticle safety evaluation‘

Moreover, Nina Hobi, scientific director and CEO of AlveoliX, mentioned the LEARN project in her presentation about organs-on-a-chip applied to preclinical decision-making.
The LEARN project is a Horizon Europe project meant to monitor and evaluate indoor air quality at schools around Europe and its impact on children’s health. Our main goal is to develop and deploy novel sensors that can detect possibly harmful air pollutants, as well as advanced biosensors and optimised air remediation strategies.
