The last MPS World Summit took place from the 9th to the 13th of June 2025 in Brussels, Belgium. Organised by the International Microphysiological System (MPS Society), the event focused on emulating human biology for patients’ benefit and a safer environment.
The LEARN project’s coordinator, the International Iberian Nanotechnology Laboratory (INL), exhibited a poster exploring how silver nanoparticles in the air can affect lung barrier function and trigger inflammatory responses.
Effects of silver nanoparticles on lung barrier function and health: studies on a new human-based triculture model
The poster, presented by INL’s researcher Vânia Vilas-Boas, explores the biological impact of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) on lung tissue. Using a novel human-based triculture model that mimics the lung barrier, the researchers exposed cells to varying concentrations of AgNPs and assessed outcomes such as cell viability, barrier integrity (via TEER measurements), and inflammatory responses.
The results showed dose-dependent cytotoxicity, compromised barrier function, and elevated inflammatory markers, indicating that AgNPs can significantly affect lung health.
This research aligns closely with the LEARN project’s Work Package 5, aimed at developing new models and methodologies to assess the health effects of air pollutants.

The LEARN project is a Horizon Europe project meant to monitor and evaluate indoor air quality at schools around Europe and its impact on children’s health. Our main goal is to develop and deploy novel sensors that can detect possibly harmful air pollutants, as well as advanced biosensors and optimised air remediation strategies.
