The 11th International Scientific Conference ‘Knowledge-Based Sustainable Development’ (ERAZ) was celebrated on the 5th of June 2025, hosted in Spain by the University of Barcelona. The conference attracted participants from 36 different countries, addressing sustainable development from a scientific, policy and societal point of view.
During the conference, Chara Karakosta from ENVIROMETRICS presented the paper ‘Bridging policy-practice gaps for enhancing indoor air quality in Greek schools‘, directly related to the cohort studies that will kick off soon in Greece as part of the LEARN project, following those in Belgium and Denmark.
Karakosta’s presentation emphasised the urgent need to tackle indoor air quality issues in schools, especially within older buildings like those commonly found in Greece.
By adopting a participatory policy-making approach, the study seeks to empower decision-makers and local communities to collaboratively develop practical solutions that promote healthier educational environments and safeguard vulnerable groups, particularly children.

The LEARN project is a Horizon Europe project meant to monitor and evaluate indoor air quality at schools around Europe and its impact on children’s health. Our main goal is to develop and deploy novel sensors that can detect possibly harmful air pollutants, as well as advanced biosensors and optimised air remediation strategies.
