The harmful health effects of oxidative stress induced by particular matter

Researchers from the International Iberian Nanotechnology Laboratory (INL), the LEARN project’s coordinator, have published a new paper about particulate matter-induced oxidative stress in the journal Environmental Toxicology and Pharmacology.

The publication, entitled ‘Particulate matter-induced oxidative stress – Mechanistic insights and antioxidant approaches reported in in vitro studies‘, summarises the latest in vitro findings on the role of oxidative stress in the damaging effects caused by particulate matter in the lung.

INL’s Nanosafety team concludes that oxidative stress is a key mechanism driving an intricate network of pathways that, if not neutralised, can lead to detrimental outcomes, including DNA damage and airway remodelling, among others.

This work was conducted in the context of the LEARN project, which is assessing the effects of the schools’ indoor air quality on children’s health.

Particulate matter and health: from atmospheric pollutants to advanced novel nanomaterials

Ernesto Alfaro-Moreno, the LEARN project’s coordinator from INL, participated in the international conference series about the Current Outlook on Atmospheric and Climate Change Sciences 2024, organised on August 2024 by Instituto de Ciencias de la Atmósfera y Cambio Climático in Mexico City.

During his presentation ‘Particulate matter and health: from atmospheric pollutants to advanced novel nanomaterials‘, Ernesto introduced the scope and objectives of the LEARN project and explained the conclusions of the above-mentioned research on the harmful health effects of oxidative stress induced by particulate matter.

The LEARN project is a Horizon Europe project meant to monitor and evaluate indoor air quality at schools around Europe and its impact on children’s health. Our main goal is to develop and deploy novel sensors that can detect possibly harmful air pollutants, as well as advanced biosensors and optimised air remediation strategies. Find out more about our EU-funded project!
